Zumba Flavour With Paula

We sent our Features reporter Rachel McInerney to talk to Zumba sensation Paula Birmingham to find out more about the lady with all the moves!


First of all Paula welcome to Navan Daily PRSS, we are delighted to have you here!

Oh I’m so excited!

So what are your class times and how much is it per class?

Well each class is pay as you go and there is a 6 week class card option as well.  Each class is €8 pay as you go and classes are  €5 for students pay as you go. Monday is 7.30- 8.30pm in Scoil Mhuire, Wednesday is 7.00-8.00pm and I am in Ben Dunne’s gym on a Thursday from 8.00-9.00pm.

Perfect!, So tell me how did you first hear about Zumba?

Well my sister had been talking about Zumba in England for ages that’s where she lives, and she’d become an instructor. I have never been to a class where I consistently go and exercise, I went to an aerobics class one time and a spin class, loved them , but never kept going regularly. So I found a Zumba class in Meath, went to it and loved it, and knew that this was what I wanted to do as my form of exercise, and to teach it at the same time.

Wow! That’s fabulous! So getting involved and being active attracted you to Zumba but did you have a dance background before you became an instructor? And if so what dance influences do you bring to your class?

Oh all sorts! I used to dance around my sitting room as a child because we lived in the country with no access to anything , so I used to play old vinyl records and think I was in Flash dance! I did hip-hop and I did modern dance as well, not for long because they were too expensive as children. I’ve always loved dance, I love music and if I’m stressed I come to Zumba and forget about everything.

How has Zumba changed you? Does it help you get through tough times?

Absolutely, my mam was sick for a long time, she was struggling with mental health issues and I myself then would be stressed about things. I found that with Zumba for one hour you forget everything, there’s no stress, all you can think about is the music and I encourage laughter as much as possible. I know the people that come to me all have different backgrounds and reasons for coming, but everyone has the same positive outlook and outcome after they finish class.

Whats the best thing that has happened to you since you became an instructor?

I think the weight management , I have always been up and down with my weight and I found it hard to find a class that suited me, at times I was heavy and at other times I was very light. I find now that I am good with my nutrition but I like a lot of food and I like to enjoy a drink, like real life! I find that the Zumba helps me maintain a healthy weight, keeps me toned and is something that I would always do, and its ageless you can do Zumba if you’re pregnant, you can do Zumba at any age! I am also involved with teaching teens in schools and with younger children.

Wow! That’s fantastic! How long have you been a Zumba instructor?

Since 2011, a long time now!

How would someone describe you? If we were to tell someone to go to your class what might your students say about you?

(laughs) They would say I’m fun, energetic, I like people to laugh .I know some classes can be very serious but I find if you’re laughing along with the class it helps you de-stress. I do try to teach a very hard class, but everyone that comes through the door can do it at their own level. If people are going to pay me to teach them something I make them work hard, I keep them fit. (laughs)

Last question for you Paula, “Don’t join the gym join the party!” is this still the Zumba slogan?

I think Zumba really just promotes health and fitness, mental well being and it’s something to make people realize that all exercise is possible for everyone.
