Here is the first in the series of The Puppy Chronicles, Introducing our features reporter Rachel McInerney and her adorable puppy Harry.

---

We arrived in Portlaoise after an hour and a half drive. Stopping to re-fuel both on petrol and tea and a scone, the excitement building.  We were twenty minutes away from welcoming the new member of the family, so that two would become three. Although our new pup was not a baby, the next few weeks proved that he wasn’t far off.

Harry came bouncing into our lives, named aptly after the young wizard as he cast a spell over everyone he met, high pitched and babbling couchi’koo sounds came from those who clasped eyes on the shaggy puppy. Storming through the house as if he always lived here, Harry investigated every nook and cranny whilst applying a fool proof durability test to most of our furniture.

The reverse-gear backwards shuffle, bum in the air and full speed was one of the many performances that made our sides split with laughter. Other not so charming tendencies got Harry in trouble more often than not, our skirting boards and wallpaper having seen better days. My father howled with laughter every time Harry was banished to jail, the act of shutting the mutt outside for three minutes seemed like a futile exercise.

Harry would only sleep in his crate with a hot water bottle , but during a difficult week I found that I couldn’t sleep without Harry and he’s been in the bed ever since. He licks my face to wake me up and follows me around, even if he is practically sleep walking.  I call my father when I’m away and talk to my furry baby, Harry confused when he can’t find me behind the phone in my fathers hand.

Now it’s near the end of November and despite much criticism, my Christmas tree lights up my living room. It’s silver with blue tinsel and it somehow only feels like Christmas is coming when Harry sits underneath, head cocked to one side, watching the lights. Harry’s first Christmas will be magical indeed!
